What to do
During a flood
Monitor local news and weather reports through a mobile device. Be alert for instructions.
If indoors
- Time allowing, move valuable property to a safe area or place it on top of furniture.
- Evacuate as instructed by emergency personnel.
If outdoors
- Climb to higher ground and stay there.
- Avoid walking through any floodwaters.
If in a car
- Do not attempt to drive through a flooded area. Turn around and go another way.
- If the car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. Do not wait inside, or you may be trapped by rising water.
During an evacuation
- If possible, secure vital equipment, records and hazardous material before leaving.
- Shut off non-essential electrical equipment
- Follow recommended evacuation routes — shortcuts may be blocked.
- Leave early enough to avoid being marooned by flooded roads. Move to a safe area.
After a flood
- Do not return to a flooded area until authorities indicate it is safe to do so.
- Use caution when entering buildings that had been flooded. Watch for loose plaster and ceilings that could fall.
- Be alert for fire hazards, such as broken or leaking gas lines, flooded electrical circuits, submerged appliances, and flammable or explosive materials.
