What to do

During a flood

Monitor local news and weather reports through a mobile device.  Be alert for instructions.

If indoors

    • Time allowing, move valuable property to a safe area or place it on top of furniture.
    • Evacuate as instructed by emergency personnel.

If outdoors

    • Climb to higher ground and stay there.
    • Avoid walking through any floodwaters.

If in a car

  • Do not attempt to drive through a flooded area. Turn around and go another way.
  • If the car stalls, abandon it immediately and climb to higher ground. Do not wait inside, or you may be trapped by rising water.

 During an evacuation

  • If possible, secure vital equipment, records and hazardous material before leaving.
  • Shut off non-essential electrical equipment
  • Follow recommended evacuation routes — shortcuts may be blocked.
  • Leave early enough to avoid being marooned by flooded roads. Move to a safe area.

After a flood

  • Do not return to a flooded area until authorities indicate it is safe to do so.
  • Use caution when entering buildings that had been flooded. Watch for loose plaster and ceilings that could fall.
  • Be alert for fire hazards, such as broken or leaking gas lines, flooded electrical circuits, submerged appliances, and flammable or explosive materials.
